Curriculum Aim, Application, and Impact

Curriculum

Our curriculum is underpinned by our school values; Belong, Care, Persevere and Succeed.

We aim to:

  • Develop happy, independent, resilient learners.
  • Develop depth in understanding, including issues relevant to the local and global community.
  • Foster a love of learning.
  • Meet children’s individual needs to enable them to be the best version of themselves.
  • Provide broad and rich experiences and make relevant cross-curricular links, so that learning is retained, applied and children are ready and prepared for the next stage in their education.

Curriculum Implementation

Our curriculum is applied by:

  • ‘Levelling the playing field’. Providing a rich experience to capture children’s interest and narrow the gap for disadvantaged children. Trips and visitors are planned within a whole school overview and are balanced across the school and between subjects.
  • Establishing a coherent, whole-school long term plan. This includes Curriculum Overviews for each year group which specify when curriculum areas are covered.
  • Unit Journey Planning which details the national curriculum objectives taught, essential knowledge and skills to be learned (progressive throughout the school), key vocabulary and the intended outcomes of each unit.
  • Giving topics a clear subject driver, high-quality text and allow blocked time to cover content in depth. A clear and progressive learning journey and adaptive teaching ensure that children master the essential knowledge and skills in each subject area and achieve a high-quality outcome.
  • Evaluating and reviewing curriculum overviews to feed into curriculum planning for the following year.
  • Developing the confidence and capability of subject leaders through continued professional development. To ensure the curriculum is implemented effectively subject leaders will develop their understanding of how skills in their subject develop and their monitoring and evaluation skills to enable ‘meaningful discussions about how they know that the curriculum is having an impact.’

Curriculum Impact

 

The impact of our curriculum:

  • Children leave BCPS as the best version of themselves, ready and prepared for the next stage of their education.
  • High quality teaching and learning in all subjects across the curriculum; monitored through the triangulation of evidence of work in the children’s books, learning conversations, teacher knowledge and assessment data. Feedback will be given to constantly improve standards.
  • Improved attainment in boys’ attainment in English to narrow the gap with girls.
  • Narrowed gap between the attainment of disadvantaged children and their peers.

Parents and carers are allowed to request the removal of their child from all or part of RE lessons. To do so, please contact the office or child's class teacher.

Unexpected School Closure

 

In the event of school closure, within 24 hours, we will move to remote learning.  This will take place via your child’s Teams account and will be a mix of both live and recorded lessons with all required resources, powerpoints and communications sent electronically via Teams. The school curriculum detailed above will be followed as closely as possible to what they would be taught in school with only the necessary adaptations to accommodate this being virtual. Children will be signposted to access the online learning platforms that we use in school too such as Times Table Rockstars, Numbots, Century and RWI phonics videos.  We may also access the DfE approved Oak National site for lesson plans and videos.

 

In the event that you cannot access your child’s Teams account we ask that you email the school office direct at office@dsatbraunstone.org and a member of our teaching or ICT team will contact you to support you with this.  We may be able to offer support with the loan of devices or for some families we can provide paper copies of work set if needed.
